Theory is important because without it, we can't get to the new principles of perception and communication. I speak about the methods of analysis in the Playscript Analysis, because we study the drama of the 20th century, which was evolving during the first century of cinema (and to a great degree as a reaction to film). Many major theories in the late modernity and postmodernity are directly applicable to film. When I teach Film&Drama I talk about this connection. A few words about Method Acting (for film directors):
Method Acting is taught by thousands since mid 30s (in America). There are many critics and many alternative methods. Each professional actor should have his own method, but Stanislavsky System provides the tools to use in developing personal acting techniques.
Psychological training is no less important than voice or movement skills. People who do not believe that acting could be taught or learned, shouldn't take any clases and try to develop their talants on their own. Historicaly, Stanislavsky created the Method not becouse he had actors without talant at the Moscow Art Theatre, his intentions were to help the best actors of Russia to inprove their talents. The defence of Method in Acting is as absurdic as explainations why we use math in physics or chemestry.
